In the whole debate about the greatest all rounder we somewhere forget about Gilchrist. I think if anyone gets close to Sir Garfield is Gilly. Unless you do not think wicketkeepers can be all rounders.

    Norman ever the gentleman :-)
Lillee was young and stupid against Barry Richards (300 in a day) and Sobers here, but he learnt from getting learnt.

Man, have a look at 1:10. This man was 36 years old and from a run-up that looks more like a jog by the beachside, he is letting it fly.
I believe Sobers was such a great batsman that his greatness almost obscured the fact that he was a bowler of special ability too.

Was the voice of the commentator that of the great late Alan McGilvray? Or was it a young Jim Maxwell?

  7. fishing reels

    they were removed at birth

  8. Taekwondo Kicks

  9. sobers had six fingers on each hand!

    definetly

  11. Taekwondo Forms

yes, thanks alot. this was quite entertaining

  12. seeing is believing- Sobers looks sublime. Deservedly called the second greatest bat of all time. Exceptional as Lara and Tendulkar are, they can’t touch him.

  13. Bats aren’t wider. They may have thicker edges but they aren’t wider.

  14. Taekwondo Kicks

thanks to youtube, i have been able to view this footage of the great sobers.

I had always assumed that Sobers was a Tendulkar-style bowler who could bowl any style reasonably and none brilliantly, but looking at that bouncer to Lillee he was a proper paceman. I never had any such doubts about his batting – among right-handers there is only Bradman at the top, and among left-handers there is only Sobers.

  16. Fishing Keepnets

Sir Don Bradman who was also present at the stadium was invited to give a special commentary on it. He told that from the last fifty years l have seen many players batting on Australian pitches but Sobers’s is the greatest innings ever played on Australian soil. And Don was a person who wouldn’t have passed such a comment without justification.

mpym767, i could kiss you for posting this! i’ve been looking for this for ages! thankyou!

  18. im glad this series was played because new bies to cricket think that players like sobers from the 50’s could play real pace…

So if sobers did it Worrell ,weeks, walcott would have played him well too…plus players who did well in that era

  19. Cheap Exercise Equipment

The GREATEST innings ever played …. Batsmen post-90 including that dog T’kar have it so easy – the financial security off the field, the 101 batsmen-protecting rules on it, tons of protective gear, extremely batting-friendly pitches, heavier and wider bats, smaller and quicker outfields. Fans of patsies like T’kar and Gilly should know what conditions innings like this epic were played in. These guys cannot play like this even in their sweetest dreams.

  20. Thanks very much for this. It would be good to see a bit more of this particular episode.
